JMe went through a period in the late eighties of painting large un-stretched canvases. Using grommets at the top to hang these pieces the work emphasized the message rather than the object. Using his quintessential elongated vertical text formations of the mid to late 80’s jonmarc structures the canvas quoting signifiers from Van Gogh; colors, the sunflower image, biographical data and meshes them together with current events of the day. Creating an insight-filled relationship between historical artifacts and present-day realities. Sunflower sets the tone for a cryptic analysis of sixties hippie slogans and socio-political issues that persists into the Eighties creating a meditation on how the more things change the more they stay the same. It was no secret at the time that Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Irises as well as other Impressionists were smashing auction records and question regarding the real value of “things” in the context of social strife and political upheaval were a hot debate.
