One of the earliest larger paintings still intact and the first painting completed after Jonmarc’s trip to Japan, One Kilometer Away is an excellent example of his interest in signs and the dynamics of mental space in a rectilinear field. The painting is a collection of textures, colors and diagrams meant to enhance the experience of the two geometric shapes resting on the upper half of the panel. Inspired by the famous Kyoto rock garden at Ryoanji temple, JMe is drawing the attention to the underlying phenomena of simple meditation and the contemplative components involved in a blissful and expanded experience. This early painting is one of the first of many pieces that will contemplate the philosophical inquiries regarding language and place, drawing parallels to the visual signs that direct us toward our inner most mental spaces.
