Oh, Thank Heaven was created in 1977 and depicts the convenience store as wallpaper covering the USA. JMe had discovered Jasper John’s and other Pop artist’s work from visiting the Detroit Institute of Art, local libraries, and avidly perusing art magazines. Rather than paint still life or landscape paintings JMe began emulating the Pop sensibility, both visually and conceptually, producing works based on mundane objects and humorous subject matter. He was also interested in M.C. Escher’s work at the time, and you can see in Oh, Thank Heaven the two graphic art styles coming together. Encouraged by his high school art teacher, JonMarc entered several pieces for the annual Detroit News scholastic art and photography awards and won several citations, including “selection for exhibition” and “most creative.”
