About JonMarc Edwards

Early Inspirations and Artistic Roots

JonMarc Edwards is a conceptual artist and designer whose creative journey began with an art award in kindergarten for his piece “Boy.” His early passion for art was evident when, at age seven, he redesigned the Batman logo and later launched his first solo show during high school. Throughout a childhood marked by frequent relocations and attendance at various public schools, Edwards’s commitment to art served as a consistent anchor.

Education and Exploration

After completing high school, Edwards attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. There, he combined punk sensibilities with a rigorous study of semiotics—the language of symbols—which shaped his artistic approach. Rather than following the typical path to New York City, he opted for Japan, seeking a “Zen experience.”

In Japan, Edwards was captivated by the dynamic blend of language, manga, and introspective practices. The contrast between Japan’s bustling urban environment and its serene temples, shrines, and gardens inspired him to consciously integrate elements of culture and nature into his art.

Professional Development and Artistic Innovation

Upon returning to the United States, Edwards balanced roles as both a visual artist and gallery director at Medium West Gallery in Minneapolis. After leaving the gallery, he dedicated himself full-time to creating large-scale graphic collages, which he described as Neo-Geo-Emo painting—works featuring compact, self-revealing content.

Edwards relocated to Los Angeles in 1990, where he developed “Merge” a system for compressing text into visual characters, effectively creating a personal language that bridges words and images. Expanding his artistic scale, JMe produced billboard installations across Los Angeles (My Work is Here) and complemented this series with contemplative paintings placed in overlooked public environments.

Major Projects and Installations

Edwards has maintained two traveling exhibitions. “The Debriti Show!” is an immersive installation modeled after an apothecary, dispensing words and poetry instead of herbs and medicinals. The show has toured Southern California and appeared at A.P.E. Gallery in Northampton, Massachusetts. For more information, visit www.debriti.com.

More recently, “FLUTTER” premiered at SEARCH + RESQ Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. This installation envelops participants with bursts of text, meaning, and visual spectacle, offering an experience that is both striking and inspiring. Learn more at Flutter film.
