This quadriptych, DEAR PATIENCE, consists of 30 layers of paint, 11 years of curated floor sweepings, an index of every color used in the piece, and 29 cultured acrylic discs. Beyond those concrete facts, the painting took about a year and a half to visualize, consider, map, compose, and paint—an unusually long process for me. I typically begin with a clear sense of what a painting is about and where it is going, while still leaving room for chance, spontaneity, and serendipity. This piece demanded more time and patience, hence the title. Like many of my titles, DEAR PATIENCE draws from music—in this case, a song reference that carries personal resonance. When a title isn’t built directly into the work, I often turn to songs I admire, songs that have inspired me, or songs tied to good memories.
